The fleeting and the eternal, the arrogant and the humble, the living and the non-living, the important and the insignificant, the still and the moving, the hope and the capitulation, the separate identity and the communion – all are the dualities that inhabit us and constitute an integral part of our experience, conscious or unconscious, as human beings.
Patricia Lortie-Sparks uses her observations of the human experience and of nature to express those dualities. Through paint and sculpture, she represents metaphors that speak of our place in a world that owns us, where we are born, live and die, like all other beings, but in the illusion of our own importance. While keeping mindful, while recognizing and accepting our place in the environment that feeds our conscious and unconscious being, our body and our minds, and trying to understand what control we hold, if any, she looks for harmony and interrelationships in apparent contrasts.
She finds her imagery and subjects in intimate moments with nature during her walks in the woods and in the mountains, and in her observation of the human experiences of her contemporaries. Her work reflects that journey as she seeks to deepen her understanding of our fleeting lives in an eternal context.
